Greeting you with a broad head, small eyes, deep muzzle, erect ears and a large curled tail is the rugged and powerful giant Akita. These beauts are wolf-like in appearance and were originally bred to guard the royalty in Japan. Tracking wild beasts including black bear and boar later became a steady occupation while today Akita’s are perfect guardian companions. They are naturally docile although they’ll be the first to sound an alarm should unusual activity occur. Akita’s also prefer to be pack leader so begin obedience training early and be sure to keep clear who is in charge.
Why you shouldn’t consider an Akita: Unless socialized well, the Akita may behave aggressively toward other people and animals. Plus, they shed lots.
Why you should consider an Akita: Akitas are dignified, rugged and powerful. Their thick coats appear in many beautiful colors and patterns while their wolf-like appearance serves as a successful deterrent for unwanted foes.
