Intelligent, courageous, and stubborn, the Airedale Terrier lives big with reckless exuberance.

The Airedale is especially rambunctious as a young one and will greet strangers with a temperament vacillating between enthusiastically friendly to sensibly polite.

Don’t be fooled, however, as these dogs have proven vigilant watchdogs.

Toward other dogs Airedales are bold and aggressive.

Toward rodents and small animals the Airedale embodies strong hunting instincts.

It’d be wise to postpone the addition of any rabbits and rodents as long as your Airedale is present.

When left alone the Airedale is a perpetual motion machine dedicated to mayhem.

So yes, you’ll want to avoid leaving your Airedale in the backyard all day.

Instead you can expect the Airedale to thrive as you indulge it with lots of personal interaction.

In addition, you’ll want to provide consistent training from a young age coupled with firm and loving guidance.

Otherwise you’ll soon find the Airedale to be too much dog to handle.

Care

Brushing should occur weekly with professional grooming happening approximately every two months.

The coat doesn’t need trimmed although many Airedales are professionally groomed in order to maintain a neat appearance as opposed to their otherwise thick, curly and unruly coat.

Shedding is nothing extreme and occurs only certain times throughout the year.

Bathing should take place only when the Airedale is dirty.

Too frequent bathing will soften the coarse terrier coat.

You’ll also want to remember basic care including trimming nails as needed, keeping the ears clean and dry to prevent infection, and brushing teeth frequently for better breath and overall good health.
