Breed Info

-AMAZONPOLLY-ONLYWORDS-END-

Originating first in Ireland as a gundog breed, the Irish Setter is an epitome of grace and athleticism combined.

Their dashing red hair is the perfect complement to their vivacious and enthusiastic selves.

Irish setters are always fond of adventure and present the perfect addition to any active family.

They’ll be a hilarious playmate for the older children (and sure to be the instigator of many good laughs) while pressing up close to the older generation to sport their love for loyal companions.

Lay eyes on any well-groomed Irish Setter and prepare for a dose of beauty personified.

Not only will an Irish be life of the party, but he’ll do it with elegance and stride as he flaunts his dashing coat with pride.

At their core, Irish Setters are likeable (to an extreme!), good with other pets, and quick to love on whoever crosses their path.

Today there are two types of Irish setters who are ready to make you laugh.

First is the field Irish Setter, and second is a show Irish Setter who will sport a thicker coat and heavier and larger build than his field counterpart.

Beyond the field, Irish Setters have won with flying colors in competitions including tracking, flyball, obedience, agility, rally and more.

Temperament

Behind their flamboyant temperaments, the Irish Setter is one tall dose of energy, independence and affectionate all bundled into one.

He’s mischievous through and through and he’s a star at becoming one’s companion.

He absolutely adores his family and hates to be alone for excessive periods of time.

Whatever you’re up to, your Irish will meet you there.

After their exercise needs are met, the Irish is a calm, companionable friend who makes an absolute dream therapy and assistant dog.

As a result, the Irish Setter is no stranger in retirement homes, hospices, and children’s hospitals.

They are quick to brighten their surroundings by bringing wide smiles to the room.

They’ll cheer a hurting child, comfort an aging citizen, and receive friendly pats from any fortunate passerby.

Exercise

If you’re looking for a couch potato, you can brush right past this gorgeous breed.

It’s no joke that the Irish Setter sports a seriously high energy level.

A leisurely walk around the block will simply not do with your growing Setter.

Rather, plan to provide your Irish with at least an hour of daily exercise.

Whether it’s playing fetch in a large backyard, swimming in the lake, hunting in the woods, or running through the park, keep exercise fun and frequent with your adoring Setter.

Provided the exercise needs are met, an Irish can settle down nearly anywhere, whether it’s a small urban dwelling or lots of sprawling acreage.

Remove exercise, however, and the damage these beauties can incur gets extreme.

In addition, the Irish Setter is forever a puppy at heart.

He’ll be slow to mature (possibly three years to adulthood) and will never lose his exuberant and vivacious spirit.

His smiles just won’t stop, and exercise will always be in high demand.

Training

Irish Setters are happy to please and will do what they can to bring you a smile.

So training needn’t be stressful when working with your Setter.

Do note that originally, the Irish was developed as a hunting dog and today those instincts are still deep in his blood.

Be firm, kind and consistent in your training.

In addition, begin training early as even at eight weeks a little Irish can absorb much.

If possible, enter your puppy into a local kindergarten and be proactive in socializing him to friends, neighbors, families and strangers alike.

Take your Irish along to pet-friendly stores, visit an outdoor shopping mall, and frequent your local dog park to enhance the socialization process.

Provided your puppy is well socialized, you’ll be rewarded with a well-rounded and charming Irish Setter who is ready to take on the world.

When searching for your perfect Irish Setter, be aware that each puppy is the product of his/her background and breeding.

If possible, meet your puppy’s parents.

Spend time with your pup prior to the big arrival home and always search for a puppy who has been well socialized from his early days.

Care

Unlike his exercise demands, an Irish Setter requires only moderate grooming.

A gentle brushing two or three times should suffice using either a soft bristle brush or pin brush.

Be sure to keep those long hanging ears dry to avoid bacteria build up as well as unwanted yeast infections.

Keep that dashing red coat gleaming with an occasional bath – perhaps twice a month – and always be sure to use a gentle vet-approved shampoo.

Utilize grooming time as an opportunity to also check your growing canine for unusual lumps and bruises.

Trim your Irish Setter’s nails regularly and brush teeth frequently to keep those pearly whites gleaming.

Average Irish Setter Price

The average cost for an Irish Setter is between $600 – $1300.

When searching for an Irish Setter, however, the price tags can span even wider.

Factors behind each price tag include the puppy’s origin, any titles the parents may have, and whether the puppy will be turning heads inside a show ring or serving as companion inside a home.

Whether your Irish is a male or female may also weigh in on the final cost.

In addition, puppies coming from clean homes with parents of good health are also likely to present higher price tags. -AMAZONPOLLY-ONLYWORDS-START-
