Designer Dogs for Sale

A dog is considered a designer breed any time both parents are purebred dogs from two different breeds.

Also considered a hybrid breed, designer breeds are created with the intention of enhancing the strong points of both parent breeds.

Typically, but not always, designer breeds will carry a higher price tag than their parent breeds.

While new designer breeds continue to be developed, the concept of mixing breeds has been around for years.

Decades ago, hybrid breeds were created for the purpose of working, hunting, or shepherding, to name a few.

Today many designer breeds are bred for the purpose of doing life alongside humans and serving as companion dogs.

To date, there are over 500 designer breeds recognized by Designer Dogs Kennel Club.  In addition, the American Canine Hybrid Club provides an extensive registry of possible designer breeds.

Unlike a mutt, with a designer breed, you are able to identify the lineage of both parents.  This way you’ll have a better idea of what to expect and exactly what bloodlines your puppy represents.

According to the VCA, when a dog is undocumented he is considered a mixed breed dog or mutt.

In contrast, when a dog’s lineage is identifiable, then he or she is considered a crossbreed or designer breed.

What to Look for in a Designer Breed

When searching for your very own designer dog breed, look first for a breeder who is concerned about the compatibility of both parent dogs.

Also, look for proof of health in each parent dog and be sure your dog is coming from happy and healthy adult dogs.

Breeders will mix a variety of breeds in an attempt to create different appearances, various temperaments, and sometimes even hypoallergenic traits.

Regardless of how skilled the breeder is, within each litter results will vary from puppy to puppy.

Within a single litter, you might find different dog sizes, contrasting coat types, a variety of colors and temperaments, and even different levels in health.

What Makes a Designer Breed?

Not every designer dog is 50% of two separate breeds.  Dogbreedinfo.com goes into deeper detail, however, in short when two purebreds are combined, the result is a first-generation designer breed (F1).

When two F1 breeds meet, their offspring becomes F2, and so forth.

Alternatively, you might breed an F1 with a purebred, or continue breeding hybrid breeds while building on different dog traits.

Whatever the case, every dog is bound to be unique and one can never truly guarantee specific results.

Now that you know what a designer dog breed is, let’s dive into 39 fantastic designer dog breeds.
